MRSA Staph Infection

MRSA in schools is just the beginning...

"What Every Mother Ought to Know (That Most Doctors Don't) About New and Emerging Dangers Threatening Her Children"

Warning: Do not read this unless you are 100% committed to your child's health!

Dear Concerned Mom,

If you are a mother who does everything she can to keep her kids safe and healthy,  this may be the most important message you will ever read.

Have you ever heard of Victoria, Texas?  This quiet town near the Gulf of Mexico is home to a spunky 12 year old named Hunter Spence.

Her story wasn't on CNN or any other major news outlet.  It was printed in the local newspaper, the Victoria Advocate, on September 2, 2007.

I found it by digging deeply into the internet while doing research.  It's not the kind of story to make national headlines.  But I think you have a right to know about it because...

IT COULD CHANGE YOUR CHILD'S LIFE FOREVER!

Five days after complaining of a sore knee and a slight fever, Hunter lay in intensive care, given only a 20% chance of survival.

The 7th grader's temperature soared to 107 degrees F.  Her organs began shutting down.  70% of her lungs were damaged. Huge holes were being eaten into them.

Doctors had to  surgically remove a "cottage cheese like layer" blocking her airflow.

Infection had burrowed deeply into Hunter's bones.  The doctors  drilled into them to drain it.  She endured seven surgeries in eight days.

But Hunter made it.  Doctors told her mother that Hunter reached the hospital just in the nick of time.  She spent four weeks in intensive care, and will be undergoing treatments until Christmas, but she's going to live.

Hunter returned to school, but hasn't recovered enough to rejoin her cheerleading team. Doctors don't know if she will ever regain full lung capacity.

The chief specialist on her case said that Hunter has "done extremely well considering she was so sick."

The fourth time was the charm?

Don't get the idea that Hunter's parents were negligent in dealing with her problem, because they were not.  Far from it.

Driscoll Hospital in Corpus Christi, 95 miles south of Victoria, was the fourth stop on the Spence's quest for help with their daughter.  This trip was made by ambulance.

The first three visits to local doctors resulted in diagnoses of the "flu, then growing pains and then juvenile rheumatoid arthritis" according to the Advocate article.

Fortunately,  Dr. Jaime Fergie, the hospital's director of pediatric infectious diseases,  is known around the world for his research on the deadly bacteria that attacked this young girl.

What is this killer bug?  Methicillan Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, more commonly known as MRSA.

In simple terms, MRSA is a mutant group of contagious bacteria that's immune to standard antibiotics.

You can think of it like a criminal gang or pirate colony that preys on a weak part of the body, like a cut or scratch.

Dr. Fergie believes Hunter picked up the "community aquired" version, known as CA-MRSA, through a cut on her knee.  "MRSA is the most common cause of skin infection in children. And because it is invasive, MRSA infection needs prompt treatment."

"This emergence is the biggest development I've seen in my career. It's affecting people who are perfectly healthy.  We have had children who have died with MRSA"

--Dr. Jaime Fergie, internationally renowned  MRSA researcher and Director of Children's Infectious Diseases, Driscoll Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas

Victoria Advocate, September 2, 2007

MRSA staph infection has been running rampant in hospitals and nursing homes for several years.  Just ask any nurse or hospital worker about it.  Hospital staffers in Victoria estimate about 20 people a day are treated for it in area emergency rooms, according to the Advocate.

Keep in mind that Victoria, Texas has a population of  62,169.

"Dr. John McNeill, a local ER physician, is worried about the infection given school resumed this week.  'I would say it is becoming epidemic. This is a contagious disease'."

How safe is your child's school?

If you're like most moms with barely enough time to breathe, keep reading...

You've got more than your hands full with the everyday tasks that fall on your shoulders. Who's got the time to become a medical expert?  Especially when the real "experts" can't even agree.

My name is Deb Thompson.  I'm not a medical expert and don't claim to be.  But I do have one special skill that could be worth it's weight in gold to you.

In college I majored in biology.  I loved it.  Soaked everything up like a sponge.  They practically had to drag me out of the lab at the end of the day.  But I could still go to the library, because it was open late!

Soon after college I got married and started a family, putting any thoughts of a career in biology on hold.  My children come first, and I was blessed enough to be able to stay home with them full time.

But money was tight.  I had to be resourceful.  We couldn't afford to run to the doctor for every little sniffle or cough.  From my training in biology, I knew that most doctors were using the "quick fix" method of treating symptons and not causes anyway.

(And over-prescribing antibiotics,  with huge consequences as you'll learn below.)

Has this  "quick fix" approach resulted in people being healthier today?

My "career" ended up being as a homeschool teacher.  I got really good at taking complicated subjects and breaking them down into easy to follow steps.

My friends began to rely on me for health advice.  They knew if I didn't already know about something, I'd have an answer the next day.

But asking me questions about health has its risks...

Once you know the facts, you don't have any more excuses

My friend Louise was typical.  With a houseful of rambunctious youngsters and 6 month old baby, she didn't have time for much else.

After caring for a neighbor's  sick toddler in her home, Louise's baby developed a deep rasping cough.  Her child had picked up the neighbor's illness .

A day later, the phone rang.  It was her neighbor.  Louise could barely believe what she was hearing.  "Whooping cough - the county health clinic told us it's epidemic here.  I'm so sorry..."  The news hit her like a ton of bricks.

Louise was still shaking when she called.  I raced over and heard the tell-tale cough.

"Get her down to your doctor, and make sure he tests for whooping cough right away," I told her somewhat sternly.  "Don't let him try to tell you whooping cough doesn't happen anymore ."

You see, there are a lot of myths going around these days.  One is that a lot diseases like whooping cough, small pox and polio and have been wiped out.   But they haven't.

They may not be as common as they once were, but they are not gone.  Often doctors will buy into the myths, and not make the proper diagnosis.

Is there a "Trojan Horse" lurking in your back yard?

Louise's doctor was that way.  "There's no whooping cough around here. Vaccines knocked it out years ago," he told her.   "Yes, it does sound like whooping cough, but it can't be."

Louise stood her ground like a mother grizzly bear, and insisted he test for whooping cough anyway.  The doctor finally gave in.  The results confirmed what we already knew.  In the mean time, two more of her children contracted it, and  had spread it among some of the families at church.

Because Louise was armed with the right information, she was able to stand up for her child.  Had she doubted and caved in, who knows how far the whooping cough would have spread among our friends and families.

We lived in a major metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest, an area known for advanced medical care.    Yet a top family physician had no clue that a disease he  believed was extinct was running rampant all around him.

So if you think that Hunter's ordeal with MRSA was the result of a few  small-town doctors not staying up to date, think again.

Are our top experts really on top of things?

Do you recall the name  Andrew Speaker?   A successful attorney, with a great career and beautiful fiance, he was living the American dream.

Andrew's story lifts the lid on a little-known ticking time bomb that is sure to SHOCK and SCARE you.  Here is what happened.

Andrew went to the doctor  to get checked out for what he thought was  a bruised rib.

The test results were shocking.   Andrew didn't have a bruised rib.  It was something much worse.

Tuberculosis.

Wasn't tuberculosis  wiped out in America before most of us were born?  Yet here was a man diagnosed with it.   And not  some poor down-and-out soul, but a young,  successful businessman.

This wasn't just the old TB making a cameo appearance, but a new strain known as multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, or MDR-TB.

What does all this mean to you?

Hang on to your seat because…

Andrew was flying on a commercial airliner.

Astonishing, isn’t it?

This story hit me hard, because one of my daughters was flying across the country at almost exactly the same time.

Would you want to be locked in a small chamber next to a man with an incurable infectious disease?  With no fresh air? For ten long hours?

Before you get angry at Andrew, you need to know this.  He contacted the Centers for Disease Control  (CDC) to ask if it was safe for him to fly to Europe.

The CDC is the U.S. government agency charged with tracking and stopping the spread of dangerous and infectious disease.   They are supposedly the world's leading experts in this field.

The CDC doctors told Andrew it OK for him to fly.  Not convinced, he asked them again.  Again, they said yes.   And again.

Andrew contacted the CDC  five times.  He was given the green light on every single occasion.

Andrew flew all the way to Italy.  After he landed, the CDC doctors gave him a call.  They had decided that he didn't have MDR-TB after all.

This wasn't a routine follow up.   They were announcing, in effect, Andrew's death sentence.

The CDC doctors told Andrew that he has the deadly strain of TB known as extremely drug resistant tuberculosis or XDR-TB.  It was discovered only last year in South Africa, and there is no known cure.

XDR-TB is "essentially untreatable" and "a potential time bomb"

--Dr. Gerald Friedland
Yale University

NY Times, August 18,2006

The doctors  told Andrew to immediately check in to a hospital for treatment.   They told him that he shouldn’t use public transportation due to the deadly and powerful communicable disease he was carrying.

Instead, Andrew Speaker took a flight to Prague, and then to Canada.  He drove to the US border.

When the US Border Patrol agent scanned his passport, a message came up saying that Andrew was carrying a deadly disease.   He was to be stopped, and health authorities  notified at once.

Incredibly, the Border Patrol agent ignored this directive and let Andrew enter the US, because “he didn’t look sick.”

Is this "Comedy of Errors" all that suprising?

We've all had to deal with mind-numbing bureaucracy on many occasions.  It shouldn't come as a shock that this sort of thing can happen.

Here we had a knowledgeable and concerned patient, the top government disease control experts, and an informed US Border Patrol agent.

Nothing went right.

How many others are walking the streets, riding city buses, or sitting in your child's  classroom with this deadly disease?

Who knows who our children may come into contact with?

And what’s worse…

Tuberculosis is just one of the many new or re-emerging diseases  threatening the health and future of your child.  We've at least heard of TB, from old novels or movies set back before the discovery of antibiotics.

But there are other more deadly ones out there, like Ebola, SARS, West Nile, Mad Cow, Chagas - the list goes on and on.

If the nation's top medical experts have trouble identifying these new diseases , does your family doctor have a fighting chance?

In our grandparent's day, doctors made house calls.  Now we schedule appointments to visit their offices.  We're lucky if we only have to wait an hour to see them.

How much time does your doctor spend with your child?

Can we expect our harried and overworked doctors to recognize one of these rare, exotic diseases?    It's likely they have never seen them before, and may not even be aware of them.

This deadly disease isn't worth reporting

The Victoria Advocate reports that Dr. Fergie, the specialist who helped save Hunter Spence's life,  is "frustrated that the Texas and federal governments haven't deemed MRSA a reportable disease" in spite of the threat it imposes.

This means that official statistics are not kept, so doctors have no way of knowing how many cases are out there.

"Unofficially" there's a lot of MRSA lurking out there.  The bureacrats may be missing it, but it isn't missing our children.

Here is a snapshot of  a search I did on Google News for the phrase school MRSA on October 7th, 2007.  These are just the first 10 results:

Google MRSA Results

Did you notice that all of these articles appeared within 19 days of each other?  They covered outbreaks in schools in five different states.

What's going on in your state?

In Hunter Spence's case, three doctors came up with different diagnoses.  Each wasn't even close.  Even with 20 cases a day being treated in area emergency rooms, these doctors weren't aware of the prevelance of MRSA in their own back yards.

Maybe if MRSA was "reportable" they would have been.

But what can we really expect?

Doctors have their hands full just with common conditions they learned about in medical school.   Even those can be hard to diagnose.

If you've dealt with  medical problems, you know that  well known and easily diagnosed conditions can be difficult to  cure.   It can take months or  years to overcome a chronic condition, no matter how "common" it is.

Here's something you probably don't know...

Standard medical treatments may be
worthless in 9 out of 10 cases!

The U.S.  Government Accounting Office (GAO) concluded that "only 10 to 20 percent of all procedures currently used in medical practice have been shown to be efficacious by controlled trials."

That's a fancy way of saying that most of them just don't work.  Keep in mind, we are talking about treatments for common, ordinary conditions we've known about for years.

Do you like those odds?

To top it off…

The carriers of these emerging diseases are typically poor, often recent immigrants who speak little or no English.  Most seek treatment in emergency rooms staffed by overworked interns and a doctor or two.

And, let's face it.  Living in an advanced society, we aren't as tough as we used to be. People from most parts of the world only seek medical care for really serious conditions. They aren't used to going to the doctor for every cough or sniffle.  They're often lucky to get care during extreme emergencies.

Americans  experienced great advances in health during the last century because of improved nutrtition, medical discoveries, and hygiene.  Most recent arrivals come from societies decades if not centuries behind in these important areas.

Immigrants from third world countries often have to be taught to use toilets. Many have never seen them before.  It isn't uncommon for landlords to find that their tenants have been curing raw meat in window sills or bathtubs.

Reality is…

Many new immigrants are working in fast food restaurants, meat packing plants, and other places where poor hygiene can be deadly.  Almost all poultry processing is done by recent immigrants from Mexico or Central America.

Where do your kids love to eat?

What's scarier - the cooks or the food?

Of course the subject of the safety of much of  our food is a whole story in and of itself...

We all remember the spinach recalls from last summer.  But have you heard the recent news about a small meat packing company, Creekstone Farms Premium Beef?  It’s an alarming story that involves the food we eat, a horrible disease, and the federal government.

This story was all but ignored by the media.  It’s news we all need to know, but we don’t, because the news media was too busy updating us on what Paris Hilton was eating in jail.

There is now a test that can determine whether or not a cow is infected with Mad Cow Disease (MCD).

Did you know that less than one percent of slaughtered cattle are tested for MCD?  Because of  this, Creekstone Farms announced  they would  test every single one of the 300,000 cows they process each year

How did the USDA respond?  As unbelievable as it sounds, the USDA  ordered Creekstone Farms not to test every one of their cattle.  Pause just a minute to think about that.

The federal agency charged with keeping our meat safe  ordered a company to stop testing their cattle for mad cow disease.

Thankfully, Creekstone Farms went to court to challenge this outrageous ruling.  A federal judge ruled that they have every right to test each cow.

The USDA is appealing the decision.

Just let that sink in for a minute...

Who do you trust with your child's future?

The CDC, the USDA, big corporations, bureaucracies... They're just a part of life.  While they can provide many benefits, they can also be heartless and uncaring.  Well, in fact they are heartless and uncaring, because they aren't human.

Only people have hearts, and can care.  No one has a heart like a mother.  God made us that way.

Picture a child being strapped on a gurney in a cold and clinical steel hallway.   A  mother's eyes tear as the cart starts to pull away, amid the machine like sounds of the busy corridor.  "We don't know what it is, but need to quarantine..." fades into a buzz  as a little hand reaches out toward her, trying to bridge the ever increasing distance.

Can you imagine how that feels?

I pray you never have to experience this.  While there are no guarantees in life, you know that a wise and caring mother doesn't count on blind luck.

You are reading this because your children mean everything to you.  You wouldn't think of turning over your God given responsibility to care for them to some bureaucrat or government agency.

There are no excuses when it comes to protecting your child.  There are no shortcuts or taking days off.

Are you ready to take responsibility for your child's healh?

We are bombarded with thousands of bits of information every day.  We notice only a tiny fraction of it.

We tune out almost everything going on around us most of the time.  It's just the way we are.

Not sure about that?  Here's a little test:

How many times have you had to tell your child or spouse the same thing?

Case closed.

You can hear something a thousand times.  But until you are ready to hear it, it won't matter.  It will go in one ear and out the other.

Once you are aware of something, it seems to pop up everywhere.  Have you ever learned a new word, then noticed that everyone seems to be using it all of a sudden?

Kind of scary, isn't it?

Direct experience will teach us.  But it isn't always the best teacher.

When it comes to your child's future, do you
want to learn the hard way?

If you've ever had a child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, you realize what a huge difference preparation can make.

If you aren't prepared, you're completely at the mercy of the doctors, the insurance company, the bureaucracy.

At the very instant your child needs your strength,  you're gripped by doubt and uncertainty.

Seriously, put some thought into this…

Ballet dancers refine their skills with months of drills and training.  Musicians practice long hours to prepare for a concert.  You can't wait until the curtain opens and the spot light glares down on you at center stage to read the script.

You've got to prepare now.  But how?

It's not your fault.  Most of what you need to know you haven't heard before.  No matter how concerned you've been, this is information you haven't been given.

This information isn't something you've been ignoring.  This is information everyone has been ignoring.

Well, almost everyone.

I've spent a lifetime studying and practicing natural health.   My degree in biology has given me the background to understand these issues.

But my experience doesn't come from a laboratory.  It comes from every day life as a mother.  I know what a mother has to do to keep their children healthy.  I understand all the responsibilites that go along with being a mother.

Even better, I know how to break things down so that you can quickly get the key information.

You see, you don't have to know more than your doctor.  That's not practical.  You just need to know enough to get his attention.  Enough for him to take you seriously.

Your doctor will thank you

Most people treat doctors as all knowing.  They blindly put their faith in whatever their doctor tells them.  That puts a lot of pressure on the doctor.

Don't you respect people who have put some effort into learning about something important to them?  Especially as important as your child's health?

The more we learn about our health and take responsibility, the more we free up our doctors to deal with the really difficult cases, and to prepare for the new ones.

And believe me, we are going to need them to be ready.

Are you relying on your doctor to know everything, or waiting for the CDC or some other government agency to decide what's "reportable?"

One of the doctors in the Victoria Advocate  article said, "All we can do is hope pharmaceuticals can develop better medications in response to this (MRSA) epidemic."

Is that good enough for you?

Well it isn't for me.  What part of extremely drug resistant TB or methicillin resistant staph makes you feel all warm and fuzzy about those prospects?

Doesn't he understand that our over reliance on antibiotics and drugs has helped create these "super bugs?"

How about all the recent lawsuits and problems with our existing pharmaceuticals?

Certainly we want to develop better medicines that can save lives. But do you want to put all your eggs in that basket?

Enough is enough!  I knew someone had to get this information out. To the ones who need it most. Busy, overworked mothers like you, who need to know...

How to Protect Your Child from Twelve Diseases Your Mother Never Told You About

You will learn about twelve emerging or re-emerging diseases that have horrible consequences for the health and well-being of your children.

You will be suprised how little most people know about them.Guard Parent

Even people who should know about them.

This is not some encyclopedia or complex medical book.  It was written by a mother for mothers who need this life saving information.

It's written in plain, easy to understand language that anyone can understand.

NOTE: If you are looking for a medical textbook with lots of complex jargon and complicated formulas, this is NOT for you.

While learning How to Protect Your Child...  you will discover:

  • Hidden dangers (that almost nobody dares talk about) lurking in your child's favorite places

  • The unwelcome, deadly visitors stalking our school playgrounds and locker rooms and the literal "silver bullet" that  stops them dead in their tracks

  • The dire consequences of being "too sweet" to your children - and the "sour grapes" you'll be rewarded with...

  • A disease of Biblical proportions that is now on our doorstep - and may be in your child's classroom

  • Why tattoos and body piercings may be as dangerous as they are unsightly - and could scar more than your child's body for life

  • Three things you absolutely need to know before you go out for fast food again (learn these or else)

  • An old defeated heavyweight champion - It's back for a rematch, and our best drugs are looking like a 90 pound weakling up against King Kong

  • Restaurant "Take Outs" that you didn't order but may be paying for the rest of your life.   These treats make "Montezuma's Revenge" feel like mild indigestion

  • Little known conditions that may ensure you never have grandchildren - whether your kids want them or not

  • The literally heart-rending consequences of a smooch from the "kissing bug" and why your child's death warrant may already be signed

  • The A B C's of Hepatitis, and how to read them.   Ignorance of this law will mean no defense

  • Unintended and irreversible side effects of video games and mp3 players that may give your child the perfect excuse for not listening to you

  • The source of 90% of all disease, and how to bullet proof your child (and yourself) against it

That's just the tip of the iceberg...

"To be forewarned is to be forearmed"

After reading How to Protect Your Child from Twelve Diseases Your Mother Never Told You About, you won't be taken by suprise.

You'll never have to gaze into your child's eyes with that helpless look of despair that says, "...but I didn't know!"

Have you considered how much money, time, effort and  getting this vital information today will save you?

What price can you put on your child's health and well-being?

Of course our children are priceless.  But economics are a reality too.

Hunter's family ran up over $1 million dollars in medical bills.  Even with insurance, a 20% deductible has left them  over $200,000 in debt.

On top of that, Hunter needs medication costing $2600 a week.   She has to take a 190 mile round trip for MRSA treatment every other week until Christmas.

Time off from work, travel expenses, these can add up quickly.  If you make $50,000 a year, taking a month off from work will cost you $4250.

You could spend the hundreds of hours of research that went into gathering this information yourself.  The sources are not hard to find.  In fact, most are referenced from official government agencies like the CDC or major newspapers like the New York Times.

If you value your time at only $10 an hour, you are looking at a $2000 or $3000 investment.

Of course, that is if you ever got around to it.  Can you afford to put off getting essential information that could be the difference in life or death for your child or someone you love?

There is no other source out there that brings all this vital information together.  You could go out and buy a book or two on each topic, which would cost you upwards of $250.

You might have to wade through titles like Chagas' Disease Vectors, Vol 3: Biochemical Aspects & Control and  Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine)  to find what you need.

The last thing any of us need is an information dump.  Mark Twain once wrote, "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead."

I've taken great pains to take out the fluff and boil this down to the essential nuggets you need.

You'll be able to immediately take the steps needed to protect your children.

A bargain at any price

By now you must be wondering “how much is all of this going to cost?"

Actually, it’s not a cost; it’s an investment in your child's future. After learning How to Protect Your Child..., you'll agree it's one of the best investments you've ever made.

Listen, people will pay money for all sorts of things.  $5.00 for a cup of coffee, or $110.00 for a pair of sneakers. So many times there's little relationship between the value provided and the cost.  Crazy, isn't it?

Make no mistake, even though the value of the information I'm providing is easily worth $97... I could never charge anything close to that without feeling like I was taking advantage of people.

Even at $47, I think most people would put off making a purchase.

So here's the deal...

The fact is, I could make a lot more money just targeting well-to-do folks who wouldn't think twice about spending $97 for their children's future. But  it wouldn’t feel right, even though I could make much more.

That's because it’s crucial to get this information out to people who will put it into practice.  When it comes to infectious disease, we're all in this together.

As a parent, you can begin an endless learning chain: You read to your children, they develop a love of stories and poems, they want to read on their own, they practice reading, and finally they read for their own information or pleasure. They become readers, and their world is forever expanded and enriched.

They have been planned so you and your child might see that math is not just work we do at school but, rather, a part of life.
