MRSA Infections

MRSA Infections

This drug resistant strain of staph is relatively recent, as the first case was documented in 1959. But it is spreading rapidly, and has become a major cause of hospital and nursing home deaths in the United Kingdom, where it came to be known as the superbug for its fierce resistance to medical drug treatment, and the number of fatalities it caused. MRSA staph is now considered endemic in Great Britain, with almost eight thousand cases reported in 2004.

In 2003 MRSA infection was cited as the leading cause or a contributing cause of nearly a thousand hospital patient deaths in Great Britain, and in 2004, it was cited in over three thousand deaths.

Here in America the fatality rate of MRSA infections hasn’t been as high as in Great Britain, so MRSA hasn’t received as much publicity. It is still widespread and growing rapidly. One report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that in 2000 there were an estimated 125,000 hospitalizations in America that involved a new diagnosis of MRSA at some point during their stay.

In September 2005, the CDC reported that they found thirty people with MRSA infections in a single evacuation center for Hurricane Katrina refugees, and that many of the victims were children.

This is very worrisome, as thirty is quite a large number for such a small group of people, and it’s unlikely that most of these infections were due to recent hospital stays (although the crowded and unsanitary conditions the refugees had been suffering under surely played a part in there being such a large number of cases).
